Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.45pm (last order for documents, 4.20pm).

Admission: No appointment is necessary, but please contact us in advance if you need any special advice. You can consult records in two buildings: General Register House, at the east end of Princes Street, and West Register House, Charlotte Square, near the west end. We advise researchers to telephone in advance to check which building they should visit. On the whole, the Historical Search Room is the best place to begin research into family history or local history at the National Archives of Scotland.
